Edward Avedisian was an influential figure in the American art scene, particularly known for his contributions to the Color Field movement and Lyrical Abstraction. Born on June 15, 1936, in Lowell, Massachusetts, Avedisian's early life was marked by a burgeoning interest in the arts, which led him to pursue formal education in the field. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he honed his skills and developed his unique artistic voice. By the late 1950s, Avedisian had moved to New York City, a hub of artistic innovation and creativity. This move proved to be pivotal in his career, as he became part of a generation of young painters who were pushing the boundaries of abstract painting. His contemporaries included notable artists such as Frank Stella, Larry Poons, and Darby Bannard, who were all exploring new directions in the wake of Abstract Expressionism. Avedisian's work during the 1960s was characterized by its bold use of color and form. His paintings from this period often featured brilliantly colored, boldly composed canvases that combined the rigor of Minimalism, the exuberance of Pop Art, and the saturated tones of Color Field painting. A frequent motif in his work was a cluster of bright, seedlike orbs set against vibrant monochrome fields, corralled by larger rings of color. These compositions created buoyant, cross-sectional images of unknown fruits, showcasing Avedisian's fascination with organic forms and his exceptional sense of color. His rise to prominence was swift, with six solo shows in New York galleries between 1958 and 1963. His work was featured on the cover of Artforum and included in significant exhibitions such as "The Responsive Eye" at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art's annuals. Collectors and major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, sought after his paintings, securing his place in the art historical canon. Despite his success, Avedisian's artistic journey was marked by evolution and change. In the mid-1970s, he moved to Hudson, New York, and his visibility in the art world diminished. His style began to shift towards representation, and he referred to his earlier abstract works as "a period style." Nevertheless, he continued to be well served by his innate feeling for color, scale, and surface. His later landscapes described his surroundings in blunt, flat shapes with singing hues reminiscent of Marsden Hartley and Paula Modersohn-Becker, yet they retained a contemporary verve. In the 1980s, Avedisian also created bright abstract sculptures from painted Styrofoam, further demonstrating his versatility and willingness to experiment with different mediums. His last show, dominated by recent landscapes, took place in 2003 at the Mitchell Algus Gallery in Chelsea. Edward Avedisian's personal life was as colorful as his paintings. His only marriage ended in divorce, and his partner, Judson Baldwin, passed away in 2006. Avedisian himself died on August 17, 2007, at the age of 71, following a period of declining health. He was survived by his son, Joseph, and a grandson. Avedisian's legacy is that of an artist who was not afraid to explore and evolve. His work from the 1960s remains a testament to a vibrant period in American art, and his later pieces reflect a mature artist who continued to engage with the visual world around him. His contributions to the field of abstract painting have left an indelible mark on the art world, and his works continue to be exhibited and celebrated for their dynamic compositions and exuberant use of color.
