Alice Baber Biography
Alice Baber was a prominent figure in the American art scene, particularly known for her contributions to Abstract Expressionism. Born on August 22, 1928, in Charleston, Illinois, Baber's early life was marked by a passion for art that manifested at a young age. By the time she was eight, she had already begun studying drawing and perspective, and by twelve, she was taking college-level painting classes, showcasing her precocious talent and dedication to her craft.
Her formal education in art began at Lindenwood College for Women in St. Charles, Missouri, where she majored in art. She further honed her skills at Indiana University, studying under the figurative expressionist Alton Pickens. After completing her studies, Baber moved to New York in 1951, a decision that would place her at the center of the burgeoning Abstract Expressionist movement.
The 1950s and 1960s were a period of exploration and growth for Baber. She lived and studied in Paris, immersing herself in the European art scene while continuing to develop her unique style. Her work during this time was characterized by its lyrical abstraction, with canvases that radiantly fused light and color through ovoid shapes that seemed to float in limitless space. This distinctive approach to painting earned her a place in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Guggenheim, Whitney, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art.
Baber's commitment to feminism was evident not only in her art but also in her efforts to organize exhibitions of women artists' work. In 1975, she curated "Color, Light and Image," an international exhibition of 125 women artists in celebration of the United Nations' International Women's Year, held at the Women's Interart Center in New York City. Her advocacy for women in the arts was a testament to her belief in equality and her desire to create opportunities for female artists.
Throughout her career, Baber was an avid traveler, which greatly influenced her work and worldview. She spent significant time in Japan in the 1960s, where she collected a vast array of Asian art. Her travels also took her to 13 Latin American countries from 1976 to 1978, where she exhibited her work and lectured on art under the auspices of the U.S. State Department.
Baber's teaching and lecturing extended to various institutions, including the School of Visual Arts, C. W. Post College, Queens College, the State University of New York College at Purchase, and the Universities of Minnesota and California. She also established a course titled "Functioning in the Art World" at the New School for Social Research, alongside artist Dorothy Gillespie.
Despite facing the challenges of cancer in her later life, Baber's dedication to her art never wavered. She continued to paint, imbuing her work with a sense of undulating, sensuous movement and pure, translucent colors. Her perseverance in the face of pain and debilitation is a testament to her strength and commitment to her artistic vision.
Alice Baber's legacy is preserved in various ways, including the Alice Baber Memorial Art Library in East Hampton, New York, and the Baber Midwest Modern Art Collection of the Greater Lafayette Museum of Art in Indiana. Her contributions to the art world are also recognized through the numerous museums and galleries that own her works, as well as private, corporate, and university collections that feature her art.
On October 2, 1982, at the age of 54, Alice Baber passed away from cancer. She was interred in Fairview Cemetery in Edgar County, Illinois. Her passing was a significant loss to the art community, but her influence continues to be felt through her vibrant and emotive works that defy stylistic trends and remain a testament to her talent and vision. Baber's life and work stand as a powerful example of the impact one artist can have on the world, breaking barriers and illuminating the canvas of abstract expressionism with her unique and enduring light.
