Lynn Chadwick Biography
Lynn Russell Chadwick, born on November 24, 1914, in the London suburb of Barnes, was a pivotal figure in 20th-century sculpture, known for his innovative use of metal in creating dynamic, expressive forms. His father, an engineer who designed industrial furnaces, and his mother, a former teacher, provided a conventional upbringing that initially steered Chadwick away from an artistic career. Despite this, Chadwick's early fascination with art led him to Merchant Taylors' School in Northwood, where he was encouraged to pursue architecture as a more viable profession. This advice directed him towards a career as an architectural draughtsman, a role he held from 1933 to 1939, which laid the groundwork for his later sculptural techniques.
Chadwick's service in the Fleet Air Arm during World War II marked a significant turning point in his life, after which he returned to London with a renewed sense of purpose. His post-war years were characterized by experimentation with sculpture and design, leading to his first mobile sculpture exhibited in 1947. This period of exploration culminated in his first solo exhibition at Gimpel Fils in London in 1950, which launched his career as a sculptor. Chadwick's early works were influenced by the mobiles of Alexander Calder, but he soon moved towards creating fixed forms, often rendered in metals such as iron, steel, or bronze. His sculptures from this period are noted for their aggressive, angular forms, which gradually evolved into softer, more human figures.
Chadwick's international reputation was solidified when he won the International Sculpture Prize at the 28th Venice Biennale in 1956, a recognition that placed him at the forefront of British sculpture. His work from the 1950s and 1960s, characterized by abstract human figures and animals, carried suggestions of the human figure and were part of a movement that followed in the steps of Henry Moore. Notable works from this period include "The Watchers," a series of bronze sculptures that exemplify Chadwick's interest in the human form and his ability to abstract it in a way that remained recognizably human.
Throughout his career, Chadwick continued to innovate, experimenting with different materials and techniques. His later works became more block-like and monumental, designed to be seen in the open, and his approach to sculpture remained constructive and additive. He created a permanent exhibition of his work at his Gloucestershire home, Lypiatt Park, which also housed the foundry that cast most of his work. Chadwick's sculptures are represented in public collections across the USA, Europe, and Australia, including the Tate Gallery, The Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Arts Council Collection of Great Britain.
Chadwick's contributions to the field of sculpture were recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including being appointed a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1964. His work was the subject of major exhibitions in Paris, London, New York, and Tokyo during the 1980s and 1990s, reflecting his enduring influence on the art world. Lynn Chadwick passed away after a lengthy illness in 2003, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and influence artists and sculptors around the world. His work was a radical response to what sculpture could be, pushing the boundaries of form, material, and expression.
