Jayashree Chakravarty Biography
Jayashree Chakravarty, born in 1956 in Khoai, Tripura, is a distinguished Indian visual artist known for her profound engagement with nature through her art. Her upbringing in Agartala, amidst the lush landscapes of Tripura, instilled in her a deep connection with nature, which has remained a central theme throughout her artistic journey. Chakravarty's early exposure to art came from her surroundings in a small town, which later became the foundation of her subjects of interest, primarily studies of nature.
Her formal education in fine arts began at Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, where she studied from 1973 to 1978. Santiniketan, with its emphasis on close interaction with nature, further nurtured her inclination towards natural themes. Here, she was influenced by the works of masters such as Nandalal Bose and Benodebihari Mukherjee, which helped her develop a nuanced vocabulary of her early interest in nature. The cosmopolitan environment of Santiniketan, populated by students and scholars from across the globe, allowed her to draw parallels between her experiences in Agartala and Santiniketan, especially in terms of their natural landscapes.
Following her time in Santiniketan, Chakravarty moved to Vadodara, Gujarat, to pursue a postgraduate diploma in painting at M.S. University during the early 1980s. This period marked a significant transition in her life and art, exposing her to post-Independence narrative art and bringing her closer to references from post-World War II American abstract art as well as Indian artists. Her studies and experiences in Vadodara served as a bridge between her past in Agartala and Santiniketan and her future explorations in France.
Between 1993 and 1995, Chakravarty attended a two-year artist-residence program in Provence, France, which had a profound impact on her artistic practice. During this time, she was influenced by the French movement Supports/Surfaces, particularly by Claude Viallat. Her interactions with members of this group and her exposure to their radical approach to painting, which involved deconstructing the painting process and its materials, significantly shaped her artistic methods.
Chakravarty's work is characterized by a deep engagement with the landscape, not merely as a subject of representation but as a complex layering of memories, experiences, and the artist's relationship with space. Her art transcends conventional landscape painting, incorporating elements from her childhood landscapes, the various spaces she encountered throughout her life, and her experiments with form and space at different junctures. This approach allows her to express a nuanced understanding of landscape as a site imbued with personal and collective memories and concerns.
Throughout her career, Chakravarty has developed a unique artistic language that incorporates organic materials such as medicinal seeds, roots, dry leaves, sap, and flowers into her installations and paintings. This choice of materials not only highlights her concern for the environment but also emphasizes the regenerative potential of nature. Her art serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for environmental healing and preservation in the face of rapid urbanization and ecological degradation.
Chakravarty's significant contributions to contemporary Indian art have been recognized through various awards and honors, including the Gujarat Lalit Kala Akademi Award and the Second Bharat Bhavan Biennale Award in 1988, among others. Her works have been exhibited widely in India and internationally, showcasing her commitment to exploring the intricate relationship between humans and nature. Through her art, Jayashree Chakravarty continues to inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the critical importance of preserving it for future generations.
