Hsiao Chin Biography
Hsiao Chin, born in Shanghai on January 30, 1935, was a pivotal figure in the development of modern abstract art, bridging Eastern and Western aesthetics in a career that spanned over six decades. His journey as an artist was marked by a relentless pursuit of spiritual and philosophical depth, which he expressed through his vibrant and minimalist compositions.
Hsiao's early life was steeped in cultural richness. His father, Hsiao You-mei, was a pioneer of modern Chinese music education and founded China's first music school, the National College of Music, in Shanghai. However, tragedy struck early when Hsiao's father passed away due to a lung disease when Hsiao was only five years old. His mother died of cancer ten years later, leaving him and his sister to be cared for by relatives. These early losses and the subsequent feeling of displacement would leave a lasting impression on Hsiao and influence his artistic expression.
In 1949, following the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Hsiao moved to Taiwan with his uncle, Wang Shih-chieh, a prominent Chinese Republican politician and scholar. There, he began his formal art education at the Taiwan Provincial Taipei Normal School, where he was exposed to both traditional Chinese art and Western modernism. It was during this time that Hsiao started to explore abstract art, which would become the hallmark of his career.
In 1955, Hsiao co-founded the Ton Fan Art Group, also known as the "Eight Great Outlaws," with seven other artists. This collective was the first post-war Chinese modern art group in Taiwan and sought to break free from the constraints of realism, searching for a modern expression of Chinese artistic heritage. The group was influenced by contemporary Western art, which was extraordinary in the context of the time, as preceding generations drew almost exclusively from 19th-century European painting.
Hsiao's quest for artistic innovation led him to Spain in 1956, where he was awarded a Spanish Government Scholarship to study. His time in Europe was transformative; he encountered the works of avant-garde movements such as Spatialism, Op Art, and Kinetic Art. He also delved into Eastern philosophies, particularly Zen Buddhism and Taoism, which would become integral to his work. In Milan, he found mentorship and camaraderie among artists like Lucio Fontana and Antonio Calderara, and in 1961, he co-founded the Punto Movement, which emphasized the spiritual aspects of art and the concept of "calm contemplation."
Hsiao's work from this period reflects a synthesis of Eastern and Western thought, characterized by geometric forms and a limited color palette. His series "Universal Energy" is emblematic of his style, exploring themes of birth, destruction, and the cosmos through vibrant brushstrokes that interweave human life with the universe. The circular and square shapes in his paintings echo the Eastern concept of "heaven is round and earth is square," representing the harmony between the two.
The 1960s and 1970s were a period of global exploration for Hsiao. He traveled to America, where he developed his "Hard Edge" series, characterized by geometric compositions and a reflection on Eastern spiritual values. His time in New York was also marked by personal challenges, including the end of his marriage and the struggle to make a living as an artist.
Tragedy struck again in 1990 when Hsiao's daughter Samantha died in an accident. This profound loss led to a period of introspection and a deepening of his spiritual practice. His subsequent work, the "Eternal Garden" series, delves into meditation and the cycle of life and death, conveying a sense of peace and acceptance of the Taoist philosophies of rebirth.
Throughout his career, Hsiao Chin received numerous accolades and his works were exhibited in major museums around the world. He established the Hsiao Chin Art Foundation in Kaohsiung in 2014, which oversees his body of work and intellectual property. Hsiao Chin passed away peacefully on June 30, 2023, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and challenge the Eurocentric legacy of abstract art. His work remains a testament to the power of cultural exchange and the universal search for meaning through art.
