Jane Freilicher Biography
Jane Freilicher, born Jane Niederhoffer on November 19, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York, was an American representational painter whose work spanned urban and country scenes, viewed from her homes in lower Manhattan and Water Mill, Long Island. Freilicher's artistic journey began early in life, fueled by a "romantic inclination to beautiful things" and a belief in her creative potential. Her early passion for art led her to elope at 17 with jazz pianist Jack Freilicher, a marriage that introduced her to the New York art scene and, through Jack, to influential figures such as Larry Rivers and Hans Hofmann.
Freilicher's formal education included studying with the legendary teacher and painter Hans Hofmann in New York and Provincetown, Massachusetts. She also graduated from Brooklyn College and received an M.A. from Columbia University. Her marriage to Jack Freilicher was annulled around 1946, and in the 1950s, she met Joe Hazan, a businessman and dancer turned painter, whom she married in 1957. The couple had one child, Elizabeth, and built a summer home in Water Mill, Long Island, where Freilicher would draw much of her inspiration.
Freilicher's career was marked by her first solo show at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in 1952, setting the stage for a prolific and accomplished career that included over fifty solo exhibitions across the United States and hundreds of group exhibitions nationwide. Her work is represented in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
A central figure in the New York School of the 1950s, Freilicher was a muse to several of its poets and writers, including John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, Frank O'Hara, and James Schuyler. Her close associations with these poets, along with painters such as Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Grace Hartigan, Fairfield Porter, and Larry Rivers, placed her at the heart of a vibrant artistic milieu. Freilicher's work, characterized by its brushy, light-saturated still lifes and luminous landscapes, stood in contrast to the dominant abstract expressionist movement of her time. Influenced by Bonnard, Vuillard, and Matisse, she remained committed to representational painting, a choice that set her apart as an outsider in an era dominated by abstraction.
Freilicher's artistic legacy is one of steadfast observation and intuitive realism, qualities that have influenced generations of painters. Her work, described as "the essence of serious painting, deceptively modest, steadfast and fluent," by Michael Kimmelman of The New York Times, captures the beauty of everyday life with a unique vision that has gained increasing recognition from critics, collectors, and younger artists alike. Her many honors included the National Academy of Design Saltus Gold Medal, the Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award from the Guild Hall Museum, and the Gold Medal in Painting from the Academy of Arts and Letters, its highest honor.
Jane Freilicher passed away on December 9, 2014, in Manhattan at the age of 90, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire and captivate. Her paintings, a testament to her love for the visible world and her emotional reaction to beauty, remain a significant contribution to American art, embodying a spirit of acceptance and a celebration of the quotidian that resonates with audiences to this day.
