Unable to cope, his father placed Charles in an orphanage, where he lived until the age of nine. The family then relocated to Los Angeles, California, which would become a significant location for Garabedian's future artistic career. From 1942 to 1945, he served as a staff sergeant in the United States Army Air Forces, where he was an aerial gunner in the European theater. Following his military service, he took advantage of the G.I. Bill to pursue higher education. Initially, he studied literature at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from 1947 to 1948, and then history at the University of Southern California, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1950. It wasn't until he was in his forties that Garabedian began to seriously engage with art, a decision that would lead him to earn a master's degree in 1961 from the University of California, Los Angeles. Garabedian's artistic journey was unconventional, as he did not begin painting until the age of 32. His late start, however, did not hinder his ability to develop a unique and expressive style that would eventually earn him widespread recognition. His work is characterized by a personal and introspective exploration of the relationship between painting and sculpture. Garabedian's fascination with Chinese culture is evident in many of his pieces, which often incorporate dragons and intricate patterns. His work also reflects a deep engagement with Greek mythology, bringing ancient narratives into a contemporary context. The artist's first solo exhibition took place at the Ceeje gallery in Los Angeles in 1963, marking the beginning of a prolific career that would span several decades. Garabedian's work was featured in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows at the California State University, Northridge (1974), and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City (1976). His group exhibitions include the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial Exhibition: Contemporary American Art, New York (1975), among others. In 1979, he was honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship for Fine Arts, recognizing his significant contributions to the field. In 2011, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art hosted a retrospective of Garabedian's work, celebrating his 50-year career and showcasing his role as a modern master. His artwork is held in the collections of prestigious institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Charles Garabedian passed away on February 11, 2016, at the age of 92, in Santa Monica, California.
