Anwar Jelal-Shemza Biography

Anwar Jalal Shemza, born on July 14, 1928, in Simla, India, to a Kashmiri and Punjabi family, was a multifaceted artist whose work spanned painting, printmaking, and writing. His grandfather owned a carpet business in Lahore, while his father was a civil servant. Shemza's early education took place in missionary schools across Shimla, Ludhiana, and Lahore. Initially enrolled to study Persian, Arabic, and Philosophy at the University of Punjab in 1943, his growing interest in art led him to transfer to the Mayo School of Arts, Lahore (now the National College of Arts), where he obtained a diploma in 1947 with distinction. Following his graduation, Shemza established a design studio in Lahore and worked for the Government of Pakistan's Public Relations Department, designing various propaganda materials. He also contributed to the Visual Aids Section of the Education Department, creating posters that promoted adult education. Between 1950 and 1953, he designed and edited Ehsas, an Urdu fortnightly periodical dedicated to art and literature. During this period, Shemza also published several novels and poems in Urdu, achieving widespread recognition as a prominent member of the Lahore intelligentsia. In 1952, Shemza co-founded the Lahore Art Circle, a group of young artists interested in modernism and abstraction, which marked a departure from the prevalent socialist realist style. He was a leading figure in Pakistan's cultural life, publishing seven novels, most notably "Sotey Jagtey" in 1957, and poetry such as "Kissa Kahani." His plays were broadcast on Radio Pakistan, and he was a key member of the modernist Lahore Art Circle. Seeking further education, Shemza relocated to London in 1956 to study at the Slade School of Fine Art. This move marked a significant change in his life and practice. In London, he encountered a pivotal moment when art historian E.H. Gombrich characterized Islamic art as purely functional, which led Shemza to abandon his previous work and embark on creating a dramatically different style and visual language. He began to fuse Western ideas of abstraction with Eastern influences such as Islamic architecture and calligraphy, developing a unique style that explored modernism through the double prism of Islamic and Western aesthetics. Shemza's work is characterized by a rigorous deployment of geometric and calligraphic forms to engage with dilemmas of identity, culture, and place in the modern and contemporary era. His visual vocabulary drew on an array of deeply studied and lived experiences, from carpet patterns and calligraphic forms to the environments around him, including Mughal architecture from Lahore and the rural landscapes of Stafford, England. He was devoted to a singular practice in which multiple histories, cultures, and experiences were distilled and expressed in pure shape and color. Throughout his career, Shemza's work was exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Pakistan and internationally. After his death on January 18, 1985, in Stafford, UK, his legacy continued to grow. His work has been included in significant exhibitions such as "The Other Story: Afro-Asian Artists in Post-War Britain" at the Hayward Gallery in 1989 and more recently in "Postwar: Art Between the Pacific and the Atlantic, 1945–1965" at Haus der Kunst in Munich. Shemza's work is part of several public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Tate, London; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Anwar Jalal Shemza's journey from the cultural milieu of Lahore to the art scene in London, his exploration of identity through art, and his synthesis of Eastern and Western aesthetics have cemented his position as a central figure in the post-colonial reappraisal of 20th-century modernism. His work continues to inspire and influence artists and scholars around the world, making him a visionary who paved the way for future generations.
