Carl-Paul Jennewein Biography
Carl Paul Jennewein was a German-born American sculptor whose work left a significant mark on the American landscape through his architectural sculptures, medals, and standalone pieces. Born on December 2, 1890, in Stuttgart, Germany, Jennewein's early exposure to the arts came through his father, a die engraver, who allowed him to observe his work. This early experience sparked Jennewein's interest in drawing, engraving, and etching. Despite his lack of interest in general education, Jennewein's passion for art was undeniable, leading him to leave school at the age of 13 to apprentice with artisans at the Kunstmuseum in Stuttgart. Over the next three years, he immersed himself in the study of painting, sculpture, architectural drawing, and art history at the university in Stuttgart.
In 1907, seeking broader horizons, Jennewein immigrated to the United States. He found work in New York City with Buhler and Lauter, a firm of architectural sculptors and commercial modelers. His evenings were spent at the Art Students League, where he studied under notable artists such as George Bridgman and Dewitt Clinton Peters. Jennewein's talent quickly became evident, and within four years of his arrival in the U.S., he began receiving commissions that showcased his skills in ornamental sculpture and painting. One of his early notable works was the Pompeiian-style bas-relief decorations for the Fifth Avenue home of John D. Rockefeller.
Jennewein's career was briefly interrupted by his service in the National Guard, but he was honorably discharged in 1916 to accept the prestigious Prix de Rome award for sculpture. This accolade allowed him to spend three years at the American Academy in Rome, a period that was instrumental in shaping his artistic style and focus on sculpture. During his time in Rome, Jennewein married Gina Pirra, his Italian tutor, with whom he would have five children.
Upon returning to the United States, Jennewein's career flourished. He became known for his architectural sculptures, which adorned many significant buildings across the country. His works include the decorations for the British Empire Building at Rockefeller Center, the pediment of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Darlington Memorial Fountain, among others. Jennewein's style, which merged Art Deco with classical influences, was both distinctive and highly regarded.
Jennewein's contributions to the art world were not limited to architectural sculpture. He also designed numerous medals, including the inaugural medal for President Harry S. Truman in 1949. His work was recognized with several honors, including election into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member in 1929 and as a full Academician in 1933.
Despite his success, Jennewein's career was not without controversy. His participation in the Great German Art Exhibitions in 1938 and 1939 and his sale of artworks to Adolf Hitler drew criticism, particularly in light of his expressed admiration for the Nazi regime's stance on art. These aspects of his life have led to a reevaluation of his legacy in recent years.
Jennewein passed away on February 22, 1978, in Larchmont, New York, leaving behind a complex legacy. His contributions to American sculpture and architectural decoration are undeniable, and his works continue to be studied and appreciated for their artistic merit. However, his political affiliations and views on art have sparked debate, underscoring the multifaceted nature of his legacy. Jennewein's life and work remain a subject of interest for art historians and scholars, reflecting the enduring impact of his artistic contributions and the controversies that surrounded him.
