Lee Krasner Biography
Lee Krasner, born Lena Krassner on October 27, 1908, in Brooklyn, New York, was a pioneering figure in the American art scene, particularly within the Abstract Expressionist movement. Her life and career were marked by a relentless pursuit of artistic innovation, a journey that saw her navigating the challenges of being a woman in a predominantly male-dominated art world. Krasner's work, characterized by its vigorous abstraction, rhythmic forms, and emotive use of color, stands as a testament to her unique contribution to 20th-century art.
Krasner was the youngest of seven children born to Russian-Jewish immigrants from Odessa, Russia (now Ukraine). From an early age, she was determined to become an artist, a decision that led her to enroll at Washington Irving High School, the only public high school in New York City at that time offering professional art training for women. After graduating, Krasner continued her education at the Women’s Art School of Cooper Union and later at the National Academy of Design, where she honed her skills in drawing, painting, and design.
The 1930s were a formative period for Krasner. She worked full-time as an artist through the Federal Art Project, part of the New Deal's efforts to employ artists during the Great Depression. It was during this time that she studied under Hans Hofmann, a German painter whose teachings on Pablo Picasso’s Synthetic Cubism and Henri Matisse’s use of color profoundly influenced her. Krasner synthesized these European influences with her own vision, developing a style of geometric abstraction grounded in floral motifs and rhythmic gesture.
In 1942, Krasner's path crossed with that of Jackson Pollock, a meeting that would significantly impact both their lives and careers. The two artists married in 1945 and moved to a farm in East Hampton, New York. Their relationship was both a personal and professional partnership, with each artist influencing the other's work. Krasner's Little Image paintings from 1946, characterized by dots and drips of paint, were inspired by Pollock’s drip paintings. However, Krasner’s work maintained a distinct identity, often working on a smaller scale and incorporating figuration and calligraphic elements, setting her apart from her Abstract Expressionist contemporaries.
The years following Pollock’s tragic death in 1956 marked a period of intense grief for Krasner, which she channeled into her art. She created a series of large-scale paintings filled with thick, expressive strokes of umber paint, moving away from figuration to express raw energy and emotion. In the 1960s and 1970s, Krasner continued to explore color and form, returning to some extent to figuration and maintaining a balance between passion and control in her work.
For many years, Krasner’s contributions to art were overshadowed by Pollock’s fame. It was not until the late 20th century that her work began to receive the recognition it deserved. Exhibitions such as “Krasner/Pollock: A Working Relationship” and a major retrospective at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1983 helped establish her as a significant artist in her own right. Krasner's work is now included in the collections of major museums worldwide, and her legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists.
Lee Krasner passed away on June 19, 1984, in New York City, leaving behind a body of work that reflects her relentless experimentation, emotional depth, and enduring impact on the American art scene. Her life and art stand as a powerful testament to her resilience, creativity, and unwavering commitment to her vision, making her one of the most important figures in Abstract Expressionism and a trailblazer for women in the arts.
