Nabil Nahas Biography
Nabil Nahas is a distinguished Lebanese artist, celebrated for his vibrant and textured paintings that merge geometric abstraction with natural forms. Born on September 18, 1949, in Beirut, Lebanon, Nahas spent his early childhood in Cairo before moving back to Lebanon. His formative years were split between these two culturally rich cities, which later influenced his artistic vision.
In 1969, Nahas moved to the United States to pursue his higher education in art. He attended Louisiana State University, where he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1971. Following this, he moved to New Haven to earn his Master of Fine Arts at Yale University in 1972. His time at Yale was pivotal; it was here that he encountered contemporary painters who would influence his decision to relocate to New York after graduation.
Nahas's career took off in New York, where he exhibited regularly at important galleries and received critical acclaim for his work. His art is characterized by a unique blend of Western abstract painting traditions with inspirations from Levantine art and architecture. Nahas is known for his use of high-chroma acrylic paint and geometric motifs, which are often suggestive of the richness of nature and the imagination.
One of the most recognizable motifs in Nahas's work is the starfish, which he has cast in acrylic paint and layered with vivid colors. His paintings are celebrated for their three-dimensional, multi-layered quality that marries geometry with nature. In his more recent work, Nahas has introduced imagery of Lebanese cedar, pine, and olive trees, which serve as direct references to his native land. These botanical portraits are emblematic of Lebanon and are a testament to Nahas's connection to his roots.
In 2018, Nahas's connection to his homeland was further solidified when he was commissioned to produce a cedar painting for a new stamp in Lebanon. This honor highlighted his status as an artist deeply connected to his Lebanese heritage.
Nahas's exhibition history is extensive and includes solo exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Yale University, Robert Miller Gallery in New York, Holly Solomon Gallery in New York, Galerie Montenay in Paris, and Ben Brown Fine Arts in London. His work has been showcased in group exhibitions around the world, including the Dallas Art Fair, Art Dubai Contemporary, and Abu Dhabi Art.
His work is held in numerous museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the High Museum in Atlanta, and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha. In recognition of his contributions to Lebanese culture, Nahas was awarded the National Order of the Cedar in July 2013.
Nahas's most recent exhibitions continue to draw attention and acclaim. His solo exhibition "Grounded in the Sky" at Château La Coste in Provence in 2023 featured two series of recent works and a never-before-seen outdoor sculpture. The exhibition included large-scale cosmic "Constellation" compositions and apocalyptic depictions of trees emblematic of Lebanon, which transformed the space into a gallery of botanical portraits.
Throughout his career, Nahas has been a master of reinvention, continually exploring new themes and techniques. His work is a testament to his ability to blend different artistic traditions into a unique and recognizable style. Nabil Nahas continues to live and work between New York and Lebanon, where he paints his "trees" series, a powerful symbol of his enduring connection to his country of birth. His art, which brings together the earth and sky, the sea and the stars, is a celebration of the creativity, diversity, and history of the Arab world.
