Henry Ossawa-Tanner Biography

Henry Ossawa Tanner, born on June 21, 1859, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, emerged as the first African-American painter to gain international acclaim, marking a significant milestone in art history. His journey from the United States to France, where he found a more accepting environment, is a testament to his resilience and dedication to his craft. Tanner's work, deeply rooted in realism and later evolving to include religious themes, continues to inspire and resonate with audiences worldwide. Tanner was the eldest of nine children born to Benjamin Tucker Tanner, a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and Sarah Miller Tanner, a woman who had escaped enslavement via the Underground Railroad. The family moved to Philadelphia during Tanner's early years, where he developed an interest in art. Despite his father's initial reservations, Tanner was determined to pursue his passion for painting. At the age of thirteen, after witnessing a landscape painter at work, he decided to become an artist. His early exposure to art was furthered by his poor health, which allowed him to spend significant time painting and drawing. In 1879, Tanner enrolled at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), where he was the only African-American student. There, he studied under Thomas Eakins, who played a crucial role in shaping Tanner's early artistic style. Despite facing racial discrimination, Tanner's talent and determination propelled him forward. In 1888, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to establish a photography studio and teach art at Clark College, though this venture barely provided him with a living. Tanner's life took a dramatic turn in 1891 when, with financial assistance from Bishop and Mrs. Joseph Crane Hartzell, he moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. Paris offered Tanner an environment free from the racial prejudices that had constrained him in the United States. He quickly acclimated to Parisian life, studying the works of European masters and refining his artistic technique. Tanner's work began to gain recognition, and by the mid-1890s, he had shifted his focus to religious themes, which would become the hallmark of his career. Tanner's religious paintings, characterized by their deep spirituality and use of light and shadow, garnered significant acclaim. Works such as "Daniel in the Lions' Den" and "The Resurrection of Lazarus" were celebrated for their emotional depth and technical mastery. "The Banjo Lesson," one of his most famous paintings, depicts a tender moment between an elderly man and a young boy, showcasing Tanner's ability to capture the human spirit. Throughout his career, Tanner achieved numerous accolades, including being awarded a silver medal at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1900 and becoming an honorary chevalier of the Order of the Legion of Honor in 1923. Despite his success, Tanner chose to remain an expatriate in France, where he felt his race mattered less to his artistic peers and critics. Tanner's legacy extends beyond his paintings. He was a symbol of hope and inspiration for African-American artists and played a significant role in the struggle for racial equality. His work continues to be celebrated in museums and galleries around the world, serving as a powerful reminder of his contributions to art and society. Henry Ossawa Tanner passed away on May 25, 1937, in Paris, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire and captivate audiences. His journey from a young boy in Philadelphia to an internationally acclaimed artist is a testament to his talent, perseverance, and the universal appeal of his art. Tanner's life and work remain a significant part of American and French art history, celebrating the enduring power of creativity and the human spirit.
