Fairfield Porter Biography
Fairfield Porter was an American painter and art critic, renowned for his representational paintings during a period when Abstract Expressionism was the dominant art movement. Born on June 10, 1907, in Winnetka, Illinois, Porter was the fourth of five children in a family that valued the arts and intellectual pursuits. His father, James Porter, was an architect, and his mother, Ruth Furness Porter, was a poet with a literary background. This environment fostered Porter's early appreciation for art and culture.
Porter's education began at Harvard University, where he majored in fine arts and graduated in 1928. His studies at Harvard were steeped in art history, which would later influence his work as both an artist and a critic. After Harvard, he continued his artistic education at the Art Students' League in New York City, where he studied under Thomas Hart Benton and Boardman Robinson. During this time, Porter also traveled to Europe, where he was deeply impressed by the works of Renaissance masters.
Despite the Great Depression, Porter was relatively unaffected financially, thanks to his family's wealth. However, he was not insulated from the social and economic turmoil of the times. He became involved in politics and socialism, contributing to socialist publications and engaging in discussions on social inequality. His political engagement would later inform his art criticism, which was known for its sensitivity to various trends and refusal to dictate artistic direction.
Porter's painting career was significantly influenced by French artists like Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, whose exhibition he saw in 1938 at the Art Institute of Chicago. These artists taught him that the ordinary could be made extraordinary through rich brushwork and interlocking patterns of color. Porter's friendship with the Dutch-born American Abstract Expressionist painter Willem de Kooning, whom he met in the late 1930s, also played a crucial role in developing his fluid style and bold use of paint.
Throughout his life, Porter remained committed to figurative realism, even as Abstract Expressionism gained popularity. His subjects often included landscapes, domestic interiors, and portraits of family, friends, and fellow artists. Many of these subjects were set in or around the family summer house on Great Spruce Head Island, Maine, and the family home at 49 South Main Street, Southampton, New York. His work is characterized by a directness and deceptive simplicity, with compositions that employ strategies and structures found within 20th-century abstraction.
Porter's domestic life was as complex as his art. With a bustling household that included four children, numerous houseguests, and friends who became long-term guests, his home life provided ample inspiration for his work. Porter's personal relationships also influenced his art; one of his long-term guests was also his sometimes lover, adding intensity to the domestic scenes he captured on canvas.
In addition to painting, Porter was a prolific art critic, writing for publications such as ARTnews and The Nation. His criticism was passionate and supportive of Abstract Expressionism, helping the public understand the complexity of abstraction. He forged strong friendships with members of the New York School, including poets John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, and James Schuyler, and painters like Jane Freilicher and Larry Rivers, many of whom appeared as subjects in his paintings.
Porter's legacy is preserved in over sixty public collections, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and The Art Institute of Chicago. He bequeathed about 250 of his works to the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, New York, a testament to his bond with the region where he spent many productive years.
Fairfield Porter passed away on September 18, 1975, in Southampton, New York, at the age of 68. His work continues to influence and inspire artists and remains a vital part of the American art narrative. His ability to find beauty in the everyday and to express the density of experience through his art has solidified his place as a significant figure in 20th-century American painting.
