Artist Rammellzee Biography
Rammellzee, born on December 15, 1960, in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York, was a multifaceted artist whose work spanned graffiti, hip-hop music, performance art, sculpture, and art theory. He was a visionary figure, known for his unique blend of gothic futurism and iconoclast panzerism, a style that sought to liberate the mystical power of letters from the constraints of modern language. Rammellzee's work was instrumental in introducing elements of the avant-garde into hip-hop culture, making him a pivotal figure in the evolution of both street art and hip-hop music.
Growing up in the Carlton Manor Projects near the Far Rockaway–Mott Avenue A train terminal station, Rammellzee was exposed to the vibrant and dynamic culture of New York City from a young age. His father, an Italian transit detective, and his African-American mother provided a diverse cultural background that influenced his artistic development. Rammellzee's graffiti work began to appear in the 1970s on New York City's subway cars and stations, particularly on the A-train, which was his local train. His early involvement in graffiti was marked by his use of multiple aliases, including Hyte, Hytestyr, EG (Evolution Griller the Master Killer), Sharissk Boo, Razz, and Maestro, painting alongside notable graffiti artists such as DONDI, OU3, Ink 76, and Doctor Revolt.
Rammellzee's artistic journey took a significant turn when he was discovered by a larger audience through the 1982 cult movie "Wild Style" by Charlie Ahearn. This exposure led to collaborations with other artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, with whom he traveled to Los Angeles and recorded the groundbreaking single "Beat Bop." Rammellzee's work in the early hip-hop scene included membership in the legendary b-boy group Rock Steady Crew and collaborations with the Death Comet Crew.
A defining aspect of Rammellzee's art was his creation of elaborate, life-size costumes known as the Garbage Gods. These costumes, crafted from the detritus of modern life, were not merely objects of art but ceremonial objects meant to be worn during his performances as an MC. Each costume had its own personality, mannerisms, and mode of movement, embodying the characters that populated Rammellzee's cosmic space opera. This blend of performance art and sculpture showcased his ability to transform everyday materials into complex, symbolic forms.
Rammellzee's philosophy of Gothic Futurism and Ikonoklast Panzerism was rooted in his belief that language enforced discipline and that by controlling language, one could steer people's thoughts and imaginations. He sought to annihilate English from the inside out, drawing inspiration from the ornate lettering of Gothic monks and the abstract styles of graffiti writing. His work aimed to arm the letters of the alphabet, liberating them from the strictures of modern language.
Throughout his career, Rammellzee remained an elusive and self-mythologizing figure, rarely photographed without one of his science-fiction-inspired masks. He lived in a studio loft in Tribeca, known as the Battle Station, where he created sculptures, paintings, and other artworks that reflected his complex theories on language, culture, and society. His work has left a lasting impact on the worlds of art and hip-hop, influencing a wide range of artists and musicians.
Rammellzee passed away on June 28, 2010, in Far Rockaway, Queens, at the age of 49. Despite his untimely death, his legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists and musicians. His work remains a testament to the power of creativity and imagination, challenging conventional notions of art and culture. Rammellzee's contributions to graffiti, hip-hop, and performance art have cemented his status as a true visionary and iconoclast, whose influence will be felt for decades to come.
