Biography
Born in Tunis to Italian parents, in 1929 Antonio Corpora arrives in Florence and in 1930 he holds an exhibition at Palazzo Bardi. He moved to Paris where he lived until 1939. He collaborated with the “Literary Fair” and in 1934 came into contact with the artists of the Galleria del Milione, where in 1939 he held a personal exhibition. In 1945 he was a refugee in Rome and together with Guttuso, who welcomed him in his studio, he developed a new pictorial language, defined by neocubist criticism. Corpora writes many essays on the subject, spreading with his thoughts and works a new poetic direction. It is part of the New Front of the Arts and is one of the founders of the Group of Eight, with which it exhibits at the 1952 Venice Biennale obtaining the Young Italian Painting Award. In 1951 he received, together with Music, the “Prix de Paris”, and the following year the two artists were presented with a personal exhibition at the Galerie de France. Since the 1950s, Christian Zervos has dedicated some important critical essays to the work of the artist. In 1955 he attended the first edition of Documenta and, in the same year, he was awarded a prize at the Rome Quadrennial. In 1956 he had a personal room at the Venice Biennale, as well as in 1958, 1960 and 1966. There were many personal exhibitions in museums and private galleries in Italy and abroad. In 1992 he attended the XII Quadrennial “Profili” with a personal room. In 2003, a year before his death, he received the President of the Republic Award and was appointed academic of San Luca.
