Biography
His first paintings are exhibited in a personal exhibition in Rome in 1924 in the historic Bragalia gallery, the only one in those years to show true quality paintings. In 1925 he left Rome for Paris and then London. He returned to Milan because of the war and after having acquired a greater awareness of his painting and his profession, in the Lombard capital he will experience one of the most intense and frenetic periods of his career, painting and selling a lot. “I feel the smoke of celebrity. Happy period of my life. I’m in a great shape for painting and more, “he notes. His hotel room in via Durini and then the beloved apartment in via Rugabella in Milan, will constantly be a crossroads of artists, writers, men of culture, but also of those “sensual and savage teenagers” that the artist loves and portrays several times. The artist’s wonderful culture, his refined aesthetic sense and elegance in touch lead him to create “different canvases, in a world of equals”. He paints romantic perspectives of Milan as in Il Foro Bonaparte, naked bodies like The flute player that he portrays in a familiar environment, scattered with personal objects, making the scene particularly intimate and still lifes, like this Fish and knife that recalls his famous natures marine of the twenties, however, moving away from that formal definition and those ordered tables where each object had its own place and volume. In fact, in recent years he has reached that rapid and instinctive brush stroke that he had admired in the Impressionists and which so much reflected his restless and anxious soul.
