Afro Biography
Afro Basaldella, a prominent
Italian painter associated with the Abstract Expressionist
movement, was born on March 4, 1912, in Udine, Italy. He
emerged as a leading figure in the post-World War II art
scene, contributing to the development of abstraction in
Italy and abroad.
Basaldella came from a family of artists, with his brothers
Dino and Mirko also pursuing careers in the arts. His early
artistic training took place at the Academy of Fine Arts in
Venice, where he studied under the guidance of master
painters like Felice Carena. However, Basaldella's artistic
vision truly flourished when he moved to Rome in the 1930s,
where he was exposed to the vibrant cultural milieu of the
Italian capital.
In the aftermath of World War II, Basaldella became
associated with the avant-garde art movement known as
"Scuola Romana" (Roman School), which sought to break away
from traditional artistic conventions and embrace new forms
of expression. Influenced by artists like Jean Dubuffet and
Willem de Kooning, Basaldella began to explore abstraction
in his work, moving away from representational forms towards
a more gestural and expressive style.
Basaldella's paintings are characterized by their dynamic
brushwork, bold colors, and sense of emotional intensity. He
often worked on a large scale, creating monumental canvases
that enveloped the viewer in a whirlwind of color and
texture. His compositions are imbued with a sense of rhythm
and movement, reflecting his fascination with the expressive
potential of paint and form.
Throughout his career, Basaldella received numerous
accolades and honors for his contributions to the arts,
including the prestigious Gran Premio di Pittura at the
Venice Biennale in 1948. His work was exhibited
internationally, bringing recognition to the burgeoning
abstract art scene in Italy.
In addition to his painting practice, Basaldella was also a
dedicated teacher, sharing his knowledge and passion for art
with future generations of artists. He taught at the
Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice and later served as the
director of the Brera Academy in Milan.
Afro Basaldella's legacy as a pioneer of abstract art in
Italy endures, inspiring artists and audiences alike with
his innovative approach to painting and his commitment to
artistic experimentation. Today, his work is celebrated for
its timeless beauty and its contribution to the evolution of
abstract expressionism on the international
