Carmelo Cappello Biography
Carmelo Cappello was an Italian sculptor born on May 21, 1912, in Ragusa, Italy. His journey into the world of art began at a young age, leading him to pursue formal education in the field. After completing his studies at the Comiso Art Institute, Cappello moved to Rome in 1929, a decision that marked the beginning of a significant phase in his career. In Rome, he lived and studied in the studio of sculptor Ettore Colla, a period during which he honed his skills and developed his unique artistic voice.
Cappello's debut as a sculptor came in 1937, and by the following year, he had his first solo exhibition at Rome's Bragaglia Gallery. The exhibition was a success, earning him immediate recognition in the art world. This early acclaim set the stage for a prolific career that saw Cappello collaborate with some of the most influential figures in Italian art and design, including Gio Ponti. Ponti, a renowned architect and designer, curated an exhibition of Cappello's work in Milan in 1942, further establishing the sculptor's reputation.
Throughout his career, Cappello was a regular participant in major art exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. He showcased his work at six Venice Biennials, seven Rome Quadrennials, and three Milan Triennials. His international presence was also notable, with exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, France, the USA, and Britain by the end of the 1970s. These exhibitions not only expanded his audience but also affirmed his status as a leading figure in the world of sculpture.
Cappello's artistic style evolved over the years, but he remained committed to exploring the possibilities of form and space. His sculptures often featured abstract, geometric shapes, reflecting his interest in the relationship between the material world and the conceptual realm. He considered the universe not as a perfect circle but as an irregular cosmic shape that could be observed from multiple perspectives. This philosophical approach to sculpture allowed him to experiment with different materials and techniques, resulting in a diverse body of work that ranged from bronze and stainless steel to more unconventional media.
One of Cappello's most celebrated works is "L'uomo nello spazio" (The Man in Space), which achieved a record price of $42,606 at auction in 2018. This piece exemplifies his mastery of form and his ability to imbue his sculptures with a sense of dynamism and movement. Throughout his career, Cappello's work was featured in numerous key galleries and museums, including the Raccolta Lercaro, and his sculptures continue to be highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts.
Carmelo Cappello passed away in 1996, leaving behind a legacy that has continued to influence the world of sculpture. His work is characterized by a deep understanding of the sculptural medium, a commitment to innovation, and a profound sense of artistic integrity. Today, Cappello's sculptures can be found in public and private collections around the world, serving as a testament to his enduring impact on the art world.
