Giuseppe Cesetti Biography

Giuseppe Cesari, often called Cavaliere d'Arpino, was a prominent Italian painter of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born in 1568 in the small town of Arpino, located between Rome and Naples, Cesari was the son of a painter of votive images. His early life set the stage for a career that would see him become one of the most sought-after artists of his time. Cesari moved to Rome, likely around 1582, and was apprenticed to Nicolò Circignani, a painter who worked in a maniera style that had developed in Rome under the influence of Federico Zuccaro. This apprenticeship was crucial for Cesari, as it allowed him to participate in the decoration of the Logge of Gregory XIII in the Vatican and to work on other significant projects. These experiences provided him with the opportunity to develop his talent and to absorb the styles of other painters, such as Cristoforo Roncalli (Il Pomerancio) and to be influenced by the works of Giovanni de' Vecchi, Andrea Lilio, Francesco Vanni, and Federico Barocci. Cesari's first independent commission came at the young age of 20, for frescoes in S. Lorenzo in Damaso, which, although lost, are known through copies. These works marked a departure from the style of his teacher Circignani and showed the influence of earlier Roman fresco cycles. Cesari's frescoes in S. Lorenzo were the beginning of what would be described as a "stile cerimoniale e rappresentativa," characterized by narrative clarity, frontality, schematization, and a larger, more imposing figure canon. Throughout the 1590s, Cesari further developed his style through major commissions in Rome and Naples. His work in the Olgiati Chapel in S. Prassede, Rome, represented a significant break with earlier Roman ceiling decoration, creating a realistic expansion of the vault that may have been influenced by his experiences with north Italian ceilings. Cesari's prominence as a painter in Rome earned him the commission for scenes of Roman history in the Palazzo dei Conservatori. His relationship with the papal court was further solidified when he was made a Cavaliere di Cristo by Pope Clement VIII for his role in supervising the decoration of the transept of the Vatican Basilica, where his own contribution was the Ascension over the main altar. In addition to large fresco cycles and numerous altarpieces, Cesari specialized in small cabinet pictures for private patrons. These works, executed on panel, copper, or slate, showcased his delicate technique and high finish, whether the subject was religious or mythological. These paintings exhibited the elegance and rarified gracefulness that were characteristic of Cesari's art. Despite the radical changes in Roman painting brought about by his former student Caravaggio and others, Cesari continued to receive significant commissions until his death in 1640. Although he did not have followers per se, his art significantly influenced his contemporaries. Caravaggio and Andrea Sacchi, who both studied with Cesari, expressed admiration for his work. Cesari was also instrumental in Guido Reni's initial success in Rome and influenced the younger Bolognese painter's style. Adam Elsheimer likely studied Cesari's small cabinet pictures, and Paul Brill was said to have benefited from studying the treatment of landscape in Cesari's paintings. Giuseppe Cesari's legacy is one of a master who bridged the Renaissance and Baroque periods, influencing the trajectory of Italian art through his innovative approaches to composition and his ability to capture the elegance and grace of his subjects. His works remain a testament to his skill and his position as one of the leading artists of his time.
