Sandro Chia Biography
Sandro Chia is an Italian painter and sculptor whose vibrant and expressive work has played a significant role in the contemporary art scene. Born on April 20, 1946, in Florence, Italy, Chia grew up in a region steeped in the rich traditions of Italian Renaissance art, which would later influence his own artistic direction.
Chia's journey into the world of art began at the Istituto d'Arte di Firenze, where he received a traditional education in art, focusing on drawing, fresco painting, and sculpture. He further honed his skills at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, graduating in 1969. The education he received provided him with a solid foundation in conventional methods and materials, which he would later build upon in his own unique style.
After completing his formal education, Chia embarked on extensive travels throughout Europe, India, and Turkey. These experiences broadened his perspective and exposed him to a variety of artistic influences. In 1970, he settled in Rome and began to exhibit his work, with his first solo show taking place at the Galleria La Salita in 1971.
During the early 1970s, Chia was involved with installations and process-oriented art. However, he grew increasingly dissatisfied with this approach and, by the mid-1970s, he returned to painting, which allowed him to express himself more fully. His early work leaned towards Conceptualism, but he soon began to embrace a more figurative style, which became a hallmark of his art.
Chia's prominence rose in the late 1970s and early 1980s as he became a principal member of the Italian Neo-Expressionist movement known as Transavanguardia. This movement, baptized by critic Achille Bonito Oliva, was characterized by a return to figurative art and expressive painting as a reaction against the conceptual and minimalist art that dominated the period. Alongside fellow artists Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Nicola De Maria, and Mimmo Paladino, Chia led the charge back into figurative and expressive art.
In 1980, Chia moved to New York City, where he lived for over two decades. His time in New York was marked by significant artistic development and recognition. He taught at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan during 1984-1985 and continued to exhibit his work extensively across Europe and the United States. Chia's paintings from this period are known for their bold use of color and dynamic compositions, often featuring larger-than-life, heroic male figures set against lush landscapes. These figures, sometimes seen as manifestations of Chia's own identity, are imbued with a sense of enigmatic purpose and vitality.
Chia's work has been featured in numerous prestigious exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, the Biennale of Paris, and documenta 7 in Kassel. His art has been displayed in many important museums and galleries internationally, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Tate in London. His contributions to the art world have been recognized with his works being included in the permanent collections of these and other esteemed institutions.
In addition to his painting and sculptural work, Chia has also been involved in the production of award-winning wines at his Castello Romitorio wine-making estate, showcasing his diverse talents and interests.
Today, Chia continues to work between his studios in Miami and Rome. His recent paintings reflect the maturity of an artist who has spent over four decades perfecting his craft. These works are more contemplative, yet they still retain the energy and sensuality that have always been central to his art. Chia's paintings remain a testament to his lifelong engagement with the human form, nature, and the rich tapestry of art history.
