Filippo de-Pisis Biography
Filippo de Pisis, born Luigi Filippo Tibertelli on May 11, 1896, in Ferrara, Italy, was a multifaceted artist known for his contributions as a painter and poet. His noble birth, as the third of seven siblings to Count Ermanno Tibertelli and Giuseppina Donini, set the stage for a life immersed in culture and the arts. From a young age, de Pisis exhibited a profound interest in literature, philosophy, and the natural sciences, which was nurtured through his education at home and later at the high school gymnasium in Bologna. His early fascination with entomology and botany not only showcased his meticulous nature but also hinted at the detailed observation that would characterize his later artistic work.
De Pisis's artistic journey was significantly influenced by his encounters with key figures of the early twentieth-century avant-garde. In 1915, he befriended Giorgio de Chirico and his brother Alberto Savinio, and later, Carlo Carrà. These relationships introduced him to Metaphysical painting, a movement that sought to reveal the mystery beneath the surface of the material world. Although initially considering himself primarily a writer, de Pisis's interactions with these artists sparked his interest in painting, leading him to host informal salons in Ferrara where de Chirico's Metaphysical paintings were first exhibited.
In 1919, de Pisis moved to Rome, marking the beginning of his painting career. Despite facing criticism for his "overly-sentimental" poetry, de Pisis found that his emotional depth translated well onto canvas. His work is characterized by airy, in-the-moment qualities, laden with a sense of pathetic pleasure-pain. He is best known for his cityscapes, metaphysically-inspired maritime scenes, and still lifes, particularly those depicting flowers. His paintings often feature unexpected juxtapositions of scale and space, creating a unique visual language that blends reality with metaphysical reflections.
De Pisis's life was as colorful and varied as his art. He lived in Rome, Paris, and Venice, embracing an extravagant lifestyle that included a pet parrot named Coco and two personal gondoliers in Venice. His work was recognized during his lifetime, with exhibitions at the Venice Biennale and a significant presence in the cultural circles of Paris, where he was influenced by Impressionism and Fauvism. Despite his success, de Pisis faced health challenges in his later years, leading to his death in Milan on April 2, 1956.
De Pisis's legacy is preserved through his contributions to the Collezione Verzocchi and the extensive collection of his works housed in the Museo Filippo de Pisis in Ferrara. His influence extends beyond his paintings, as he was also a prolific writer, contributing essays on artistic themes and collections of poetry. His work continues to be celebrated for its lyrical quality, innovative approach to traditional genres, and the delicate balance between the reality of feelings and metaphysical inquiry.
Throughout his career, de Pisis remained a figure of intrigue and complexity, blending whimsicality with profound intellectual and emotional depth. His art, marked by a distinctive use of color and light, captures the fleeting moments of beauty in the everyday, inviting viewers to explore the nuanced layers of reality and imagination. Filippo de Pisis remains a pivotal figure in the Italian art scene of the first half of the twentieth century, celebrated for his unique ability to weave together the threads of painting and poetry into a rich tapestry of artistic expression.
