Leonor Fini Biography

Ennio Finzi, born in Venice in 1931, is a distinguished Italian Postwar & Contemporary painter whose career spans several decades, marked by a profound exploration of color, light, and form. His journey into the world of art began at an early age, driven by a dual passion for painting and music. This early inclination led him to attend courses briefly at the Institute of Art in Venice, where he embarked on a lifelong quest to transcend the representation of given reality through his art. Finzi's artistic evolution was significantly influenced by the reopening of the Historic Archives of the Contemporary Arts in Venice after the 1948 Biennale. This event offered him the invaluable opportunity to dedicate himself to the study of avant-garde movements and their masters, which played a crucial role in shaping his artistic vision. The encounter with Atanasio Soldati, who spent a period in Venice, was particularly stimulating for Finzi, likely influencing his subsequent works characterized by bright chromatics and rigorous formal symmetry. This period marked the birth of Finzi's first "inventions," where rhythm, color, light, and tone became fundamental elements of his research. The influence of Virgilio Guidi and Emilio Vedova, with their strong ideological and expressive brushstrokes, respectively, also left a significant mark on Finzi's work. The discovery of dodecaphonic music introduced him to the principle of "dissonance," leading to a groundbreaking approach to color, which he preferred to "listen to" rather than "see," exploring its most intimate resonances. This exploration allowed him to express himself freely under different and altogether aleatory rules, marking a period of obsessive search for the semantics of brushstroke, light, and tone until the late 1950s. The late 1950s brought a calm and more reflective dimension to Finzi's work, influenced by the remarkable insights of Lucio Fontana. This period was characterized by a path of superseding painting itself and moving closer to gestalt theories on the phenomenology of perception. The principles of optical art informed his research on optical effects due to the phenomenon of retinal conservation of images until 1978. After a short crisis, Finzi rediscovered the immediacy of painting in 1980, exploring themes related to color and going beyond the dissonance of the 1950s. This phase saw painting becoming the dominant space with color and non-color, light and shade successively alternating and competing on the surface of the work. Finzi's work is marked by an incessant questioning of working style, making him foreign to any preconceived stylistic form and earning him the professional label of "non-style." Through the experience of experience, he continually follows the dream of surprise in painting, emphasizing constant regeneration and catharsis. In more recent years, he retakes connotations rooted in painting and color, but these connotations are no longer inhibited by ideologically closed regimes. The artist retakes with an abandon that is completely open and available to the totality of feeling which is painting. Ennio Finzi's artistic journey is a testament to his relentless pursuit of innovation and his profound engagement with the sensory and conceptual possibilities of painting. His work, characterized by greater chromatic sumptuousness and sudden elimination of luminosity, continues to captivate and inspire, reflecting an enduring commitment to exploring the most secret resonances of non-existence in the invisibility of painting itself.
