Imi Knoebel Biography

Imi Knoebel, born Klaus Wolf Knoebel in 1940 in Dessau, Germany, is a pivotal figure in post-war German art, known for his minimalist and abstract contributions to painting and sculpture. His work, characterized by a rigorous exploration of form, color, space, and material, stands as a testament to the enduring influence of high modernism, drawing from the legacies of Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich. Knoebel's oeuvre is marked by large-scale, modular shapes and a commanding use of color relationships, devoid of metaphor and allusion, which positions him as a significant voice in 20th-century Minimalist abstract art. Knoebel's artistic journey began in the early 1960s when he attended the Arts and Crafts School in Darmstadt. It was here that he was first exposed to the theories of Johannes Itten and László Moholy-Nagy, which were foundational to the Bauhaus movement. This early education set the stage for Knoebel's lifelong commitment to the fundamental questions of art, a commitment that would be further shaped and defined by his subsequent studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under the tutelage of Joseph Beuys. At the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Knoebel was assigned the now-legendary ‘Raum 19’ along with his friend Rainer (Imi) Giese. This formative experience in ‘Raum 19’ initiated Knoebel's exploration into the endless permutations of formal relationships within installation work, leading to his first major large-scale work, Raum 19, named after classroom No. 19 at the Kunstakademie. This work announced Knoebel's focus on installation as a medium and marked the beginning of his explorations into color in 1974. Knoebel's work is resolutely abstract, taking Kazimir Malevich’s aesthetic notion of ‘pure perception’ as its point of departure. He has stated, "When I am asked about what I think when I look at a painting, I can only answer that I don’t think at all; I look at it and can only take in the beauty, and I don’t want to see it in relation to anything else. Only what I see, simply because it has its own validity." This approach is evident in his minimal compositions, which rely on a strict, pared-down vocabulary of forms combined with a subtle but commanding use of color, exposing the physical possibilities inherent in basic materials such as plywood, aluminum, and fiberboard. Throughout his career, Knoebel has exhibited widely, including solo shows at prestigious venues such as Haus Der Kunst in Munich, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. In 2011, he undertook a major commission for the Reims Cathedral, creating a series of six monumental stained glass panes on the occasion of its 800th anniversary. His work is held in numerous public collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Dia:Beacon in Beacon, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Knoebel's artistic practice is remarkably varied, encompassing painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, projections, and installations. Despite beginning his career working in monochromatic tones, much of his later oeuvre is distinctive for its bright palette, as seen in 24 Colors for Blinky (1977), named in memoriam of his close friend and fellow painter Blinky Palermo. This work, among others, underscores Knoebel's profound engagement with color as a driving force in his art. Knoebel's contributions to art extend beyond his individual creations. His work, particularly in the realm of installation, challenges traditional notions of presentation and staging, reflecting a considerable debt to his mentor, Joseph Beuys, while simultaneously eschewing Beuys's ideology. Through works like Raum 19, Knoebel purges his materials of all metaphor and allusion, focusing instead on a strictly pragmatic investigation and revision of the formal properties, syntax, and protocols of the exhibition space. Today, Imi Knoebel lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany, continuing to explore the boundaries of minimalist and abstract art. His enduring legacy is that of an artist who, through a near-ascetic disposition toward the materials of his craft, has carved a unique path in the post-war art landscape, one that continues to inspire and challenge the conventions of painting and sculpture.
