Horst Kuhnert Biography
Horst Kuhnert, born on June 22, 1939, in Schweidnitz (now Świdnica, Poland), is a distinguished German sculptor and artist whose work has significantly contributed to the fields of abstract painting and sculpture. His journey into the arts began with his studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, Germany, from 1957 to 1962, where he was mentored by Professor Heinrich Wildemann. This period laid the foundation for Kuhnert's exploration and eventual mastery over various forms of artistic expression.
The year 1963 marked a pivotal point in Kuhnert's career as he transitioned his focus from abstract painting to sculpture. This shift was not merely a change in medium but represented a deeper exploration into the spatial and dimensional aspects of art. By 1964, Kuhnert had begun creating Raumflächen bas-reliefs and Raumkörper sculptures, both utilizing polyester, a material that was relatively novel in the art world at the time. His innovative use of polyester allowed him to push the boundaries of traditional sculpture and explore new forms and expressions.
Kuhnert's work is characterized by a deep engagement with the concept of space, both physical and conceptual. This is evident in his development of the concept "from surface to space," which became a central theme in his work. In 1965, he created sculptures made of polyester known as "Raumkörper" (spatial bodies), further exploring this theme. By 1969, Kuhnert had expanded his repertoire to include large sculptures as well as extensive wall and room installations, showcasing his ability to engage with space on a grand scale.
Throughout his career, Kuhnert has been recognized for his contributions to the art world. He was one of the first artists in Germany to work with polyester, a testament to his innovative spirit. His work is represented in numerous prestigious collections, including the Staatsgalerie and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, the German Bundestag, and the Museum of Concrete Art in Ingolstadt. Additionally, his sculptures and installations have found their place in various public spaces, further solidifying his impact on the German art scene.
Kuhnert's artistic achievements have been acknowledged through several awards and honors. In 1985, he received the Sponsorship Award of the State of Lower Saxony. Earlier, in 1970, he was awarded the Prize of the Kingdom of Nepal at the international exhibition in Kathmandu, highlighting his international recognition.
Over the years, Kuhnert has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. His exhibitions have spanned a wide range of venues, from galleries in Stuttgart, such as the 1965 Gallery in Jakobsbrunnen and the Behr Gallery, to international spaces like the Civic Museum of Contemporary Art of Calasetta in Sicily and the Municipal Gallery in the Palace of Culture Warsaw. These exhibitions have allowed audiences around the world to experience Kuhnert's exploration of space and form.
Kuhnert's work has also been featured in various art auctions, where pieces such as his "Abstract Composition (1975)" have been sold, demonstrating the continued interest and value in his artistic contributions. His dedication to exploring the interplay between space, form, and material has made him a significant figure in the postwar and contemporary art scene.
Living and working in Stuttgart, Horst Kuhnert continues to inspire and influence the art world with his innovative approaches to sculpture and painting. His exploration of the boundaries between the real and the imaginary, the stable and the unstable, remains a testament to his enduring creativity and vision.
