Berto Lardera Biography
Berto Lardera, an Italian sculptor renowned for his monumental metallic sculptures, was born on December 18, 1911, in La Spezia, Italy. The son of a naval engineer, Lardera's early environment, surrounded by the mechanical and industrial landscape of naval dockyards, undoubtedly influenced his artistic direction. Despite being largely self-taught, Lardera's sculptures would come to be celebrated for their innovative approach to form and space.
Lardera's journey into the world of art began at a young age, and his initial works were characterized by abstract metal structures that challenged traditional sculptural forms. These early pieces were based on two dimensions, or a flat geometrical plane, which was a significant departure from the conventional focus on volume and enclosed spaces in sculpture. His unique perspective on sculpture was not just a rebellion against the norm but also an exploration of the possibilities within the medium.
In 1947, Lardera moved to Paris, a city that would become his home until his death in 1989. Paris, with its vibrant art scene, provided the perfect backdrop for Lardera to develop and exhibit his work. He became associated with the Galerie Denise René and participated in exhibitions at the Salon de Mai and the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, which were pivotal in establishing his reputation in the art world.
As his career progressed, Lardera's work evolved to include more diverse forms. His geometrical constructions began to extend into the horizontal plane as well as the vertical, resulting in a series of works based on single themes such as the "Miracles," "Aubes," and "Archanges" series. These series showcased Lardera's ability to iterate on a concept, exploring it through various forms and expressions.
Lardera's sculptures are found across the globe, from Europe to America and Japan, reflecting the international recognition he achieved. His choice of materials was as varied as the locations his works reached, utilizing a wide range of metals and dimensions to bring his visions to life. This diversity in materials and scale is a testament to Lardera's mastery over his craft and his willingness to experiment and push boundaries.
Interestingly, Lardera did not produce a large number of prints, but when he did, they were markedly "sculptural" in nature. He employed a unique technique for creating these prints, using his sculpting tools to cut forms and designs into thick iron plates. These plates were then used to pull prints, a process that did not involve any acid or chemical treatments, further highlighting Lardera's innovative approach to art-making.
Lardera's art was not only shaped by his technical skills and innovative methods but also by his travels and experiences. He drew inspiration from the landscapes and cultures he encountered, which infused his work with a sense of dynamism and global perspective. His sculptures, while abstract, often evoke a sense of place and time, inviting viewers to engage with them on multiple levels.
Throughout his life, Lardera remained dedicated to his art, and his contributions to the field of sculpture have been recognized by key galleries and museums, including the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. His legacy is one of creativity, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of new ways to interpret space and form through sculpture.
Berto Lardera passed away in February 1989 in Paris, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire and influence artists and art enthusiasts alike. His sculptures stand as monuments to his vision and skill, and his approach to art-making serves as a reminder of the power of innovation and the importance of challenging the status quo. Lardera's life and work are a testament to the enduring impact one individual can have on the world of art.
