André Lhote, born on July 5, 1885, in Bordeaux, France, was a pivotal figure in the development of early 20th-century modern art. His journey into the world of art began at a young age when he apprenticed in a woodworking workshop, learning ornamental wood sculpting. This early exposure to craftsmanship and design would later influence his approach to painting, which was characterized by a strong sense of structure and composition.
Lhote's formal education in art commenced at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, where he studied decorative arts. However, it was his autodidactic pursuit of painting that truly ignited his passion. By 1905, he had made the decisive move to abandon wood sculpting and concentrate solely on painting, a decision that led him to leave his family home due to their disapproval of his artistic ambitions.
In 1907, Lhote relocated to Paris, the epicenter of the art world, where he immersed himself in the vibrant cultural scene. His early works were influenced by the Fauvist movement, known for its bold use of color and expressive brushwork. However, Lhote's style evolved as he became increasingly drawn to Cubism, a revolutionary artistic language that deconstructed traditional perspectives and embraced abstract forms.
By 1910, Lhote had his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Druet, marking the beginning of his professional career as an artist. His association with the Section d'Or group in 1912 further solidified his place within the Cubist movement. Lhote's pedagogical approach was grounded in the belief that art should balance form and structure with emotional expression. His teachings were encapsulated in his published treatises, including "Traité du paysage" and "Traité de la figure," which explored landscape and figure painting, respectively.

He also held private exhibitions at galleries like Druet and La Maison de la Pensée Française.

In recognition of his contributions to art, Lhote received several accolades, including the Grand Prix National des Arts in 1955. He was also appointed president of the International Association of Painters, Engravers, and Sculptors by UNESCO.
