Armando Marrocco Biography
Armando Marrocco, born in 1939 in Galatina, Italy, is a distinguished artist whose work has significantly contributed to the post-war Italian art scene. His journey into the world of art began at a young age, and over the years, he has developed a unique artistic language that bridges abstraction, precision, and symbolic gesturality. Marrocco's work is deeply informed by his interactions with renowned artists, his interest in mathematical principles, and his appreciation for Renaissance craftsmanship.
In 1959, at the age of 20, Marrocco met the famous Argentine-Italian artist Lucio Fontana, who was captivated by Marrocco's interest in Art Informel. This meeting proved to be a pivotal moment in Marrocco's career. Fontana's encouragement led Marrocco to move to Milan in 1962, where he immersed himself in an environment that nurtured his artistic development. In Milan, Marrocco began to explore and refine his practice, drawing inspiration from mathematicians such as Fibonacci and Luca Pacioli, as well as the beauty of Renaissance art. This period marked the beginning of Marrocco's exploration into a form of abstraction that was both precise and symbolically rich.
Marrocco's early works, particularly those from his "Intrecci" series, which he began in the early 1960s, are emblematic of his innovative approach to art. "Intrecci," meaning intertwining, is a series of vibrant monochromatic works made of enamel on cardboard. These works stand out for their methodological significance in Marrocco's career, defining his artistic practice for decades. The "Intrecci" series was Marrocco's response to the "beyond Informel" works of the previous generation of artists, including Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, and Yves Klein. By using layered and woven cardboard sheets—a material considered 'poor'—Marrocco transformed these humble substrates into intriguing, substantial objects through his application of enamel paint. The compositional grid of each artwork, created through complex layering, interacts with shadows to produce a unique dynamism. Beyond their minimalist visual effect, Marrocco asserts that his "Intrecci" works are an 'interweaving of human situations, positive and negative,' thus speaking to the very essence of existence.
Marrocco's artistic philosophy is deeply reflective and holistic. He views his creations as complete entities that encompass the past, present, and future. For Marrocco, art does not end when it is displayed on a wall; rather, it continues to live in space indefinitely, engaging in an ongoing dialogue and maintaining an arcane relationship with the viewer. He draws inspiration from a wide range of experiences, challenges, and solutions encountered throughout his life. Marrocco's fearless approach to art-making has seen him explore various mediums, including sculpture, painting, fresco, performance, music, and theater. His work is characterized by a continuous exploration of material and immaterial elements, seeking to reveal the magic and strength within them. Marrocco's art transcends traditional categorizations, existing neither as sculpture nor painting but as a dynamic entity that evokes emotions, moments of life, and interactions with space.
Throughout his career, Marrocco has remained committed to an artistic practice that is both innovative and deeply humanistic. His works are a testament to his belief in the transformative power of art and its ability to weave together the complexities of human experience. As his art continues to be celebrated and exhibited around the world, Armando Marrocco's legacy as a pioneering figure in the Italian and international art scenes is firmly established.
