Titina Maselli Biography
Titina Maselli, born in Rome on April 11, 1924, into a family deeply entrenched in the arts, was an Italian artist whose work spanned several decades and crossed various artistic movements, yet she remained fiercely independent in her style and thematic choices. Her father, Ercole Labroca, a well-known art critic, and her mother, Elena Labroca, provided an environment rich with intellectual and artistic stimulation. This early exposure to the arts, alongside the influence of her father and her later husband, Toti Scialoja, a prominent figure in the art world, played a significant role in shaping her artistic journey. However, Maselli's true artistic identity emerged as she deliberately distanced herself from their influences, carving out a unique path that defied easy categorization.
Maselli's artistic vocation was evident from a young age, nurtured within a learned family environment frequented by painters, writers, musicians, and intellectuals. Despite the early influences, she developed a personal iconography that intentionally kept her outside of any specific style or artistic movement of her time. Her focus was not on the grandeur of imperial and baroque Rome but on the neighborhoods destroyed by bombing, the reconstruction sites, and the shiny asphalt of roads, which she often painted after setting up her easel in the middle of the night.
In 1948, Maselli had her first personal exhibition, presented by Corrado Alvaro at the Galleria l’Obelisco in Rome. This marked the beginning of a prolific career that saw her participating in major national exhibitions, including various editions of the Venice Biennale of Art from 1950 to 1995 and the Quadrennial of Rome from 1951 to 2000. Her move to New York in 1952 was driven by a fascination for the American metropolis, which influenced her work significantly, maturing themes such as the urban landscape and representations of boxers or footballers, and imbuing them with a new expressive force.
Maselli's work during the Pop Art era was characterized by large-scale works that depicted cities, skyscrapers, tram lines, traffic signals at night, and neon signs, reflecting the omnipresent themes of modernity. Her portrayal of urban landscapes and athletic figures in bold tones of red and blue, and a style that was clearly Pop, set her apart from her contemporaries. Despite her association with the Pop Art movement, Maselli's work was deeply personal, reflecting her unique perspective on the world around her.
Throughout her career, Maselli also engaged in set design, working mainly for French and German theaters, and her work was featured in major exhibitions across Europe and the United States. Her contributions to the art world were not limited to her paintings; she was also recognized for her set designs, including notable works for the Avignon Festival and the Freie Volksbühne in Berlin.
Maselli's artistic legacy is one of independence and innovation. Her refusal to conform to any single artistic movement or style allowed her to explore a wide range of subjects and themes, from the devastation of post-war Rome to the vibrant energy of New York City. Her work captures the essence of the urban environment, reflecting both its physical appearance and the emotional resonance it holds for those who inhabit it.
Titina Maselli passed away in 2005, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be celebrated for its boldness, vibrancy, and unique perspective. Her paintings, characterized by their dynamic compositions and intense use of color, remain a testament to her vision and her unwavering commitment to her art. Maselli's contribution to the Italian and international art scenes is undeniable, and her work continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
