Pippo Oriani Biography
Giuseppe Oriani, known as Pippo Oriani, was an Italian painter and architect whose life and work were emblematic of the dynamic and transformative period of the early 20th century. Born on June 25, 1909, in Turin, Italy, into a family of building contractors, Oriani was exposed to the world of art and construction from a young age. His birth coincided with the publication of the Futurist Manifesto in "Le Figaro," a document that would later influence his artistic direction.
In the late 1920s, Oriani became associated with the Futurist movement during its second phase. This avant-garde movement, characterized by its emphasis on modernity, speed, and technological progress, resonated with Oriani's interests and background. His friendship with Gino Severini, a prominent painter of the time, led him to Paris between 1930 and 1936. It was during this period that Oriani honed his skills and developed his unique style, particularly in the genre of "Aeropittura," which celebrated the velocity and dynamism of airplanes.
Oriani's paintings from this era, such as "Aeropittura" (1932) and "Study for Aeropittura" (1930), are characterized by their aerial landscapes that seem to blend the influences of Metaphysical Painting and Surrealist landscapes. His work "La Donna della Fabbrica" (1935) is another example of his artistic output during this time. These pieces reflect his fascination with flight and the modern world, capturing the essence of movement and the machine age.
Trained as an architect, Oriani's dual interests in painting and architecture informed each other. However, the outbreak of World War II marked a turning point in his career. After the war, he temporarily abandoned painting to focus on his work as an architect and interior designer. It wasn't until the late 1950s that Oriani returned to the canvas, revisiting some of his earlier works and creating new ones that continued to explore similar themes.
Throughout his career, Oriani's work was recognized and appreciated for its innovative approach and contribution to the Futurist movement. His paintings have been held in major museums and galleries of modern art around the world, including in cities such as Turin and Milan. His legacy as an artist is also marked by his influence on the aesthetics and philosophy of his time.
Pippo Oriani's life was tragically cut short when he died in a car accident in Rome in 1972. Despite his untimely death, Oriani's work continues to be celebrated and studied for its significant impact on the Futurist movement and modern art. His paintings, which often fetch high prices at auctions, are a testament to his enduring influence and the lasting appeal of his artistic vision.
Oriani's biography is not just a tale of an individual artist but also a reflection of the tumultuous and innovative times he lived in. His journey from architecture to painting and back again, his embrace of Futurism, and his exploration of the metaphysical and surreal in his art, all speak to a man deeply engaged with the world around him and committed to expressing its complexities through his work. Oriani's life and art remain a vibrant part of Italy's cultural heritage, offering insight into the country's artistic evolution in the 20th century.
