Arnaldo Pomodoro Biography
Arnaldo Pomodoro is a renowned Italian sculptor whose work has captivated audiences and critics alike with its exploration of geometric forms and the tension between external perfection and internal complexity. Born on June 23, 1926, in Morciano di Romagna, Italy, Pomodoro's early life was spent in the city of Pesaro, where he received his education and developed an interest in art and scenography. He moved to Milan in 1954, a city that would become his long-term home and the base from which he would launch his illustrious career.
Pomodoro's journey into the world of art began with his work as a civil engineer, reconstructing buildings destroyed during World War II. However, his passion for the arts soon led him to pursue more creative endeavors. By the 1950s, he had shifted his focus towards artistic pursuits, studying stage design and working as a goldsmith. This experience with fine metals and intricate design would later influence his sculptural work, which often features a meticulous attention to detail and a fascination with the properties of materials.
In Milan, Pomodoro became part of the vibrant artistic community, meeting influential artists such as Lucio Fontana, Enrico Baj, and Sergio Dangelo. His early exhibitions featured jewelry, showcasing his skill with metals such as gold and silver, and later iron and bronze. Pomodoro's work from this period includes high-reliefs where a unique sculptural "writing" emerged, which was variously interpreted by prominent critics.
The 1960s marked a significant shift in Pomodoro's work as he turned to three-dimensional sculptures, focusing his research on solid geometric forms such as spheres, discs, pyramids, cones, columns, and cubes. These forms, often rendered in burnished bronze, are characterized by their lacerated, corroded, and excavated surfaces, revealing a chaotic complexity within. This juxtaposition between the shiny perfection of their geometric shape and the intricate insides became a constant in Pomodoro's production.
One of his most famous works, the "Sphere Within Sphere" series, can be found in prominent locations around the world, including the Vatican Museums, the United Nations Headquarters, and Trinity College, Dublin. These monumental sculptures are emblematic of Pomodoro's style, with their polished exteriors opening up to reveal intricate internal mechanisms, suggesting a hidden world of inner workings.
Pomodoro's artistic contributions extend beyond sculpture. He has been involved in set design for numerous theatrical works, ranging from Greek tragedy to contemporary theater and music. His "spectacular machines" for stage productions demonstrate his ability to blend sculpture with performance art, creating immersive experiences for audiences.
Throughout his career, Pomodoro has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. He received the Sculpture Prizes at the Biennials of São Paulo (1963) and Venice (1964), the Imperial Praemium for Sculpture from the Japan Art Association (1990), and the Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center (2008). He has also been awarded honorary degrees from Trinity College Dublin and the University of Ancona.
In 1995, Pomodoro established the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro in Milan. The foundation was conceived as a cultural and exhibition center dedicated to contemporary art, with a focus on documenting and archiving Pomodoro's work. It serves as an inventive space for study and discussion on contemporary art themes, aiming for a profound and global engagement with the public.
Pomodoro's work has been exhibited internationally, with traveling exhibitions touring Europe, America, Australia, and Japan. His sculptures are held in numerous public and private collections, and his influence on modern sculpture is undeniable. As an artist, Pomodoro continues to renew his approach, ensuring that his work remains current and relevant, solidifying his status as a master of modern bronze sculpture.
