Mauro Reggiani Biography
Mauro Reggiani, born in Nonantola, Modena, Italy, on August 11, 1897, and passing away in Milan on May 20, 1980, was a pioneering figure in the Italian abstract art movement. His artistic journey, spanning several decades, reflects a profound evolution from figurative to abstract art, marking him as a key contributor to the development of modernism in Italy.
Reggiani's early life was deeply influenced by the cultural and artistic milieu of Italy. After World War I, he became associated with prominent painters such as Carlo Carrà, Achille Funi, and Pietro Marussig. This period was crucial for Reggiani, as it exposed him to the burgeoning movements that sought to redefine Italian art in the wake of the war's devastation. His travels to Paris in 1926 and 1930 further broadened his artistic horizons, introducing him to the works of Vassily Kandinsky, Alberto Magnelli, Jean Arp, and Max Ernst. These encounters were instrumental in shaping his artistic direction, steering him towards abstraction.
In 1934, Reggiani took part in the first exhibition of Italian abstractionism at the Galleria del Milione in Milan, a landmark event that signaled the arrival of abstract art in Italy. He was among the signatories of the first manifesto of Abstractionism, advocating for an art that transcended the representational to express the inner realities of the artist. His commitment to the avant-garde was evident in his participation in significant exhibitions, such as those in Turin in 1935 and the commission to fresco the church of the Villaggio Battisti in Cyrenaica in 1938.
The outbreak of World War II imposed a forced hiatus on Reggiani's artistic activities, but the post-war period saw a resurgence in his work. He returned to Milan and became part of a group of artists, including Gillo Dorfles, Bruno Munari, Mario Radice, Manlio Rho, and Atanasio Soldati, who were instrumental in the revival of the Italian abstract movement. In 1960, his contributions were recognized internationally when he participated in the historical exhibition of abstractionism, Construction and Geometry in Painting, held in New York.
Reggiani's abstract vision was characterized by a rigorous evolution, always adhering to a formal discipline that eschewed decorative complacency. His work aimed at expressing absolute through geometric shapes, enhanced by an interplay of colors that sought to evoke a spiritual aspiration. This pursuit of a meditated organic architecture of vision was celebrated in numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad during the 1960s and 1970s, establishing Reggiani as a significant figure in the Italian cultural landscape.
His death in Milan in 1980 marked the end of a prolific career that had a lasting impact on the trajectory of Italian art. Reggiani's legacy is preserved in his contributions to the development of abstractionism in Italy, where he is remembered as a pioneer alongside contemporaries such as Alberto Magnelli, Enrico Prampolini, and Atanasio Soldati. His work continues to inspire artists and art enthusiasts, embodying the spirit of innovation and the quest for a visual language that transcends the boundaries of the tangible world.
