Angelo Savelli Biography
Angelo Savelli, born on October 30, 1911, in Pizzo Calabro, Catanzaro, Italy, was a distinguished Italian painter known for his abstract figurative paintings, landscapes, cityscapes, and particularly for his exploration of the color white. His journey into the world of art began early, influenced by his uncle, the self-taught painter Alfonso Barone. Encouraged by his father, Giorgio Savelli, a pharmacist, Angelo moved to Rome to further his education in the arts. He attended a high school specializing in arts before enrolling at the Accademia delle Belle Arti, where he graduated in 1936. During his early years in Rome, Savelli was a guest of Lucifero Falcone, the Minister of the Royal House of Savoy and a friend of his father.
Savelli's artistic journey was temporarily interrupted by his military service. He obtained a pilot's license and a student grant from the Ministry of War in 1934. He served as an infantry officer during the late 1930s and was redrafted in 1943 during World War II. After the war, he returned to Rome, where he became involved with the Futurist circle and was one of the founders of the Art Club. This period marked the beginning of his lifelong friendships with several members of the Scuola Romana or Roman School, a group of artists active in Rome in the 1920s and 1930s.
Savelli's artistic sensibility underwent a significant transformation after several stays in Paris, where he was exposed to new artistic movements and ideas. He married journalist Elisabeth Fischer in 1953 and soon after emigrated to New York, a move that would profoundly influence his artistic output. In New York, Savelli became known for his screen-prints and monochromatic works, primarily white-on-white, which challenged the potential enacted by 'white' through relief printings, changes to the materials, rejects of colors, and alteration of shapes. His work during this period was characterized by extreme lightness and formal purity, distancing himself from the expressive violence of "action painting."
Savelli's contributions to art were recognized with the Guggenheim fellowship for the Arts in 1980, which allowed him to exhibit in Europe and gain notoriety. He taught at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Philadelphia, Cornell, and the University of Texas. His practice of Zen and Yoga helped him overcome serious health problems and the tragic death of his wife in 1982. After her death, Savelli returned to Italy for a short period before opening his last studio in New York in 1988.
Despite his international success, Savelli remained deeply connected to his Italian roots. He returned permanently to Italy in 1995 to organize two important exhibitions: an anthology at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Prato "Luigi Pecci" and a personal room at the XLVI Venice Biennale. Unfortunately, Savelli passed away on April 27, 1995, just weeks before these exhibitions were scheduled to open.
Throughout his career, Savelli's work was characterized by a continuous exploration of the essence of nature and the purity of color, particularly white. His art, defined by critics as a sequence of images freed from figurative references, aspired to reach the essential soul of nature. Angelo Savelli's legacy is preserved in his innovative contributions to European and American modern art, his influence on future generations of artists, and his works housed in prestigious collections, including the Whitney Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
