Cheyney Thompson Biography
Cheyney Thompson is an American artist whose practice is deeply rooted in the exploration of painting as a medium, its production, distribution, and exhibition within contemporary art. Born in 1975 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Thompson has established himself as a significant figure in the postwar and contemporary art scene. His work is characterized by an analytical approach that often incorporates mathematical and economic formulas, as well as technological processes, to challenge and expand the traditional boundaries of painting.
Thompson received his BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1997. His education also included studies at Tufts University, Harvard University, and L’École Nationale-Superieur Des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This diverse educational background has contributed to the intellectual rigor and formal precision that are hallmarks of his work.
Throughout his career, Thompson has been known for imposing structures and constraints onto the making of his work, which in turn become generative, leading to exhaustive investigations into the medium of painting and the problems that surround it. He ties his works to mathematical and economic formulas, his own labor as an artist, and the architecture that his paintings occupy, creating a tension between their formal qualities and the larger systems of circulation they inhabit.
Thompson's projects often span several years and are centered on an inquiry into the production, distribution, and exhibition of painting. His work responds to a long history of debates about how art depicts the world and how we come to know the world visually. For Thompson, reality is something that we can know only in terms of probabilities, not absolutes. He often produces work that explores contingency at the formal level, sometimes in his artistic process itself, and sometimes through the use of external constraints such as computer algorithms, which he subverts as often as he follows.
His solo exhibitions have been numerous and notable. In 2017, Thompson's work was the subject of an exhibition at The Brno House of Arts in Brno, Czechia, with Sam Lewitt. Other solo exhibitions include "Cheyney Thompson The Completed Reference: Pedestals and Drunken Walks" at Kunstverein Braunschweig, Germany, in 2012, and "Cheyney Thompson: metric, pedestal, landlord, cabengo, recit," curated by João Ribas at the MIT Visual Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2012. His work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions, such as "Invisible Adversaries: Marieluise Hessel Collection" at the Hessel Museum of Art, Bard College, in 2016, and the 2008 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
Thompson's work is held in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, SFMoMA in San Francisco, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from modest to significant, reflecting the growing recognition of his contributions to contemporary art.
In addition to his visual art practice, Thompson has also shared a very personal selection celebrating friendships around music, reflecting his early days on a super-competitive drum line in high school and his explorations into various musical genres. This aspect of his life underscores the multifaceted nature of his creative expression.
Thompson's work has been featured in articles for notable publications such as ARTnews, Arte Fuse, and Art Market Monitor. His first museum survey was held in 2012 at the List Visual Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and he has been represented by galleries such as Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York and Lisson Gallery, which has spaces in New York, London, and Shanghai.
Cheyney Thompson's art is a testament to his commitment to examining and reimagining the processes and systems that underlie the creation and perception of art. His work invites viewers to engage with the conceptual and material conditions of image production, challenging assumptions about order and chance in the world of art.
