Marco Tirelli Biography
Marco Tirelli, born in 1956 in Rome, Italy, is a contemporary artist whose work spans across drawing, sculpture, and painting, exploring the intricate relationship between reality and illusion, light and darkness. Tirelli's artistic journey began in an environment steeped in art and culture, thanks to his father's role as the manager of the Swiss Institute in Rome. This unique upbringing allowed him to be surrounded by scholars and artists from a young age, fostering his talents in drawing. Recognizing his advanced skills, he was given a studio space at the tender age of 15.
Tirelli pursued formal education in art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he specialized in scenography under the tutelage of Toti Scialoja. His studies in set design, coupled with his admiration for Swiss theatrical designer Adolphe Appia, significantly influenced his artistic approach, particularly in the use of geometric forms and dramatic lighting. This period of his life laid the foundation for his exploration of the representation of ideas in their most distilled form.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Tirelli became a prominent figure in the New Roman School, a movement characterized by its members' diverse artistic practices. He established his studio in the former Cerere pasta factory in San Lorenzo, Rome, where he worked alongside other artists, including Bruno Ceccobelli, Gianni Dessi, Giuseppe Gallo, Nunzio, and Piero Pizzi Cannella. This collaborative environment further enriched his artistic development.
Tirelli's work is deeply informed by his background and the layered histories of his environment. He is particularly fascinated by the tension between the surface appearance of objects and their underlying collective memories and cultural values. His art, ranging from drawings and sculptures to large-scale paintings, often features dramatic contrasts of light and dark, employing hazy sfumato and illusionistic effects to suggest not the realistic qualities of objects themselves but the imaginary worlds attached to them.
A significant aspect of Tirelli's practice is his drawing, which serves both as preparatory studies and as final works in their own right. He draws inspiration from a broad array of subject matters, including geometric shapes, natural elements, manmade machines, architectural forms, and everyday objects. His works often seem to depict luminous objects emerging from complete darkness, a technique influenced by his time in Spoleto, a city known for its intense darkness far from the bright lights of urban centers.
Tirelli's contributions to the art world have been recognized internationally through solo and group exhibitions, including significant appearances at the Venice Biennale, the São Paolo Biennial, and the Rome Quadriennale. His work is part of collections in prestigious museums worldwide, such as the National Museum of 21st Century Art (MAXXI) in Rome, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (MACRO), the European Parliament Art Collection in Brussels, the Fortuny Museum in Venice, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Mumok (Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig) in Vienna, and the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan.
Throughout his career, Tirelli has remained committed to exploring the possibilities and limits of perception, seeking to reveal the echoes and traces of something beyond the visible. His work invites viewers to transcend the immediate and enter a realm where form and light open up to deeper meanings, embodying the imaginative power and marvel of art.
