Luis Tomasello Biography
Luis Tomasello was an Argentine artist, born on November 29, 1915, in La Plata, Buenos Aires, to an Italian family. His early life was marked by humble beginnings, working alongside his father as a bricklayer, carpenter, and painter. Despite these modest origins, Tomasello's passion for art led him to pursue formal education in the field. From 1929 to 1931, he attended evening drawing classes, and later, he was educated at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón in Buenos Aires from 1932 to 1938. His studies continued at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes Ernesto de la Cárcova from 1940 to 1944, where he honed his skills and developed his artistic vision.
During the mid-1940s, Buenos Aires was a hotbed of artistic innovation, challenging traditional representational art. It was during this time that Tomasello encountered Emilio Pettoruti and Carmelo Arden Quin, two pivotal figures in the Argentine avant-garde movement. These interactions were instrumental in shaping his artistic direction. In 1951, Tomasello traveled to Paris for the first time, a city that would later become his permanent home in 1957. This move marked a significant turning point in his career, as he joined the vibrant expatriate community of Latin American kinetic artists in Paris, including notable figures like Victor Vasarely and Jesús Rafael Soto.
Tomasello's early work was influenced by Concrete Art, drawing inspiration from Piet Mondrian. However, his relocation to Paris and his association with the Galerie Denise René in 1958 catalyzed a shift towards kinetic and optical art. He began experimenting with geometric abstraction on flat surfaces, leading to the development of his signature style. Tomasello is best known for his Atmosphères Chromoplastiques, a series of kinetic reliefs that explore the interplay of color, light, and shadow. These works consist of sequences of polyhedral elements arranged over blank surfaces, creating virtual movement and visual illusions. From the 1960s onwards, Tomasello expanded his exploration into color, further enriching his artistic repertoire.
Tomasello's contributions to the art world were not confined to his studio. He participated in major international events related to lumino-kinetic art and completed numerous large-scale public art commissions in Argentina, France, Mexico, and the United States. His works are held in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Tate Modern in London, among others.
Throughout his career, Tomasello remained committed to the principle of achieving the maximum effect with minimal means, a philosophy he attributed to Mondrian. His work unites sculpture and painting, allowing for their integration into architectural spaces. This approach reflects his belief in the intrinsic power of light and color to transform space and engage the viewer's perception.
Luis Tomasello passed away on January 17, 2014, in Paris, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and influence the fields of kinetic and optical art. His dedication to exploring the nuances of light and color has cemented his place as a pivotal figure in the art world, bridging the gap between concrete art and the kinetic art movements of the 20th century. Through his innovative use of geometric forms and his exploration of visual perception, Tomasello's work invites viewers to experience the dynamic interplay of light and shadow, challenging them to see beyond the surface and engage with the underlying complexities of his creations.
